Pest control FAQs

General questions

How quickly can you come out?

In most of Kent we can attend the same or next day. For urgent jobs, call or WhatsApp us for the fastest slot.

Are your treatments safe for children and pets?

Yes. We use professional products applied in a controlled way, and we'll tell you exactly what precautions to take, if any.

How many visits will I need?

Wasp nests usually need one visit. Rodents, cockroaches and bed bugs typically need two or three to make sure the problem is fully resolved.

Do you work with businesses?

Yes. We offer one-off treatments and ongoing contracts for food businesses, hospitality, retail, offices, landlords and more.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the pest and the property. Send us the form or a WhatsApp message and we'll give you a fixed price before we start.

Do you cover my area?

We cover Medway, Maidstone and the rest of Kent. See our Areas We Cover page or call us to check your postcode.

Do I need to be at home?

For most treatments, yes, so we can inspect and explain what we've done. For some commercial jobs we can arrange access with you.

Is there a callout charge?

We'll confirm any callout charge when you book, so there are no surprises.

Who runs Pest Free Homes?

Pest Free Homes is run by Heat Plumb Drain Ltd, based at the Innovation Centre in Medway.

Rats

How many visits does rat treatment take?

Most homes need two or three visits over a couple of weeks so we can confirm the problem is fully resolved and proof any entry points.

Is rat treatment safe for children and pets?

Yes. We use locked, tamper-resistant bait stations and place them out of reach, and we'll explain any precautions before we start.

Can you find out how rats are getting in?

Yes. Finding and proofing the entry point is part of every rat job, because treatment alone won't stop new rats arriving.

Mice

If I've seen one mouse, are there more?

Usually, yes. Mice breed quickly and are rarely alone, so it's worth getting it checked early.

How quickly can you come out?

We offer same-day and next-day appointments in most of Kent. Call or WhatsApp us for the fastest slot.

Will mice come back after treatment?

Proofing the entry points is part of the job, which is the best way to stop new mice getting in.

Wasps

Do you need to remove the nest?

Usually not. Once treated, the nest dies off and wasps don't reuse old nests. We can remove it if it's accessible and you'd like it gone.

Are they wasps or bees?

Wasps are bright yellow and black with a smooth body; bees are hairier and browner. If they're bees, see our bee removal service, as we relocate them where possible.

How long does it take?

Most wasp nest treatments take less than an hour, and we can usually come the same day.

Bed Bugs

Do I need to throw away my mattress?

Usually not. Most mattresses can be treated. We'll tell you honestly if something is too badly infested to save.

What is heat treatment?

Heat treatment raises the room temperature to a level that kills bed bugs and their eggs, without chemicals. It's often used where a fast result is needed.

Do you work with landlords and hotels?

Yes. We treat rented homes, HMOs, hotels and guest houses, and can work around guests and tenants.

Cockroaches

How long does cockroach treatment take?

Cockroaches usually need a programme of two or three visits, because eggs hatch after the first treatment.

Do you treat restaurants and food businesses?

Yes. See our commercial pest control page for one-off treatments and ongoing contracts.

Will I need to leave my home?

Usually not for gel treatments. If we spray, we'll tell you how long to keep people and pets out of the room.

Ants

Why do the ants keep coming back?

Shop-bought sprays kill the ants you see but not the queen. Baits work because the ants take them back to the nest.

Are flying ants a problem?

Flying ants usually only appear for a few days a year. If they're coming from inside your home, there may be a nest that needs treating.

Fleas

I don't have pets. Why do I have fleas?

Fleas can be left behind by previous occupants' pets, or brought in by wildlife such as foxes or birds nesting nearby.

When will the fleas be gone?

You'll see a big drop quickly, but some fleas can emerge for up to two weeks as they hatch and contact the treatment. Keep vacuuming during this time.

Squirrels

Can't you just release them somewhere else?

No. Grey squirrels are an invasive species and it's illegal to release them into the wild once caught.

Is it a squirrel or a rat in my loft?

Squirrels are mostly active during the day, especially early morning, while rats are more active at night. We can confirm during a survey.
